I am a Professor of History at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania where I currently direct the Graduate Program in Applied History and teaches courses in Public History, historic preservation, historical research methods, modern United States History and World History. I received my Bachelor's degree in History from Colgate University (Hamilton, New York) and my Master's degree and Ph.D. in United States history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While attending graduate school, I worked part-time for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin's Archives Division and the Division of Public History. I am also the co-author of Editing Historical Documents: A Handbook of Practice (Altamira Press, 1997), assistant editor of Yesterday's Future: The Twentieth Century Begins (State Historical Society of Wisconsin Press, 1999), and editor of Black History of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, 1860-1936 (Shippensburg University Press, 2005). My recent research and public history work has focused on documenting, preserving, and interpreting historic African-American cemeteries in Pennsylvania’s Cumberland Valley. I took a workshop called “The Digital Humanities Toolbox” at a National Council for Public History conference, and then used that to teach myself how to use Google Maps and to create web pages using Blogger. I am eager to learn about technology, and I really want to be able to help my students become more technologically savvy.
